How has this page been nominated for speedy deletion?

[edit]

Diaz currently plays for Club Atlético Independiente, who are the most successful team in the history of the Copa Libertadores and play in the Argentine 1st division. His previous clubs include Club Toluca of the Mexican first division and Club Atlético Lanús, who are the current champions of Argentine football. The only reason I can see behind this nomination is that his name kind of resembles the name of El Cid. All that needed to be done to check the players notability was to click the link to Independiente, playing for this team is automatically notable by the guidelines at WP:BIO and the more specific notability criteria accepted by WP:Football. No playing for the team does not make him automatically notable. When you came to my talk page to quote WP:BIO did you even read it? Did you take note of where it says "The topic of an article should be notable, or "worthy of notice". This concept is distinct from "fame", "importance", or "popularity"." Just by playing for Club Atlético Independiente doesn't make him notable. Has he played in a World Cup? Do you think every footballer deserves a page on Wikipedia or something? What about every Doctor, or every Teacher? What's so special about Footballers? What's so special about this particular footballer? Do you need his article to complete your linkfarm or something? Where are the third party references telling how great this guy is? You really desperately want to save the article? That's pretty easy since apparently he's so notable! Just supply the references and show us how remarkable he really is. Instead of coming to my talk page and whining with the "please remove your tag" and then rudely proclaiming I "must have an absolute lack of knowledge of world football (soccer)", how about since you're so knowledgable you go and fix the article so it demonstrates notability. In the mean time I'll leave the CSD tag on it for an Admin to decide upon the matter. Sting_au Talk 11:43, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

PROD

[edit]

I just want to see some decent references for this guy. I'm prepared to take this as far as it will go. Reference the championship games he played in (for what team) and any awards he's won etc, and I'll be happy to let it rest. Sting_au Talk 12:55, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the prod. It is quite clear that he meets WP:BIO criteria, and your attempts to delete the article smack of WP:POINT. пﮟოьεԻ 57 13:23, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'll take a look at this article tomorrow. If somethings not done about the references I'm taking this to WP:AfD. Sting_au Talk 13:33, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well I was about to put this article up for WP:AfD but editors are prompted to fix the article first if they can? I Googled heaps but couldn't come up with a lot. On further investigation I felt this article failed WP:BLP in as much as lacking in verifiability. i.e. no reliable sources? As I had regarded the Footbal-lineups.com link is nothing more than a blog website that members log into and add to as they want (somewhat like Wikipedia in that regard?) so in my opinion relying solely on that link also fails WP:BLP on no original research grounds. Putting up the article for AfD would be waste of Admins time as was pointed out to me. I can appreciate that would be the case but still feel the article should have been properly referenced citing reliable sources. To be honest there are probably many articles on this guy in Spanish. Unfortunately that is a language I can't read or translate. Sting_au Talk 01:39, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
